A song by your favorite band

“The Background” - Third Eye Blind

Choosing just one 3eb song is impossible for me (like asking a mother to pick her favorite child, etc etc). Obviously they are my favorite band because I adore every bit of music they make (the only exception being the song featuring Kimya Dawson, because her voice makes me want to rip my ears off).

But finally, after much internal debate, I settled on The Background. First, because I really really love this song. Secondly, because even though I do love the poppy mega hits they are famous for, it is the deeper, meaningful songs like this one that make them my favorite. Anyone who writes them off as just another 90s band is missing out.

A song that reminds you of the past summer

"Runaway Train" - Brandon Boyd

His entire solo album reminds me of last summer, but this was the single and therefore the first song I heard off it. I used to listen to the album while I adjusted to my new adult life at my first real job, or on my way over to Beacon Hill to see Jeannie. Good times.

Brandon Boyd is so good at everything, and it never ceases to amaze me.

A song that reminds you of a best friend

“Yellow Cat (Slash) Red Cat” - Say Anything

There are hundreds of songs that remind me of best friends, but I chose this one since it reminds me of the maximum amount of my buddies.

This reminds me of one of Laura’s beach parties, either the summer before college or the summer after freshman year (I can’t remember which). Almost all of my high school friends were there, and we’d spent the afternoon splashing in the water, eating junk food, being super cool, etc etc. When it got dark, we circled up around the campfire and I remember this song playing in the background.

These are my friends, this is who they have been for always…

A song that calms you down

Aqueous Transmission - Incubus

This song makes me feel all Zen. I like to listen to it through my headphones while lying on my bed, like the mattress is an actual raft floating down a river.

Obviously I'm not the only one who feels this way, because singer Brandon Boyd called it "a song so atmospheric and vibratory, it would make those who listened to it doze off into a land of rivers, kung fu and unicorns, eventually making the listener pee in her/his pants." Thankfully I don't do that.

Coincidentally, Incubus released a brand new song today.

A song that reminds you of one/both of your parents

Burning Down The House - Talking Heads

Talking Heads is pretty much the only band my parents can agree on. So naturally, this is the first song I can remember. In fact, one of my earliest memories is dancing around the living room chanting "BURN HOUSE!"

Thank goodness my parents raised me on a respectable band that gives me a tiny bit of street cred. You rule, Mom and Dad.

A Song From Your Childhood

Londonbeat - "I've Been Thinking About You"

This song was my jam when I was three. My parents owned a health club, so I spent a lot of time in the gym with my stuffed animals, listening to the aerobics music. Apparently I used to do some slow-motion head-banging when particularly groovy songs came on - I was a rocker even then. But "I've Been Thinking About You" was always my favorite. Recently, my mom presented me with her original Londonbeat cassette, and I will treasure it always as a memento of my very first favorite song.

25 Songs, 25 Days Challenge

I haven't had much for music-related news to blog about lately. Instead, I've been backtracking and listening to classic bands that I always hear about but never actually listen to. While I've had a lot of fun finally discovering what all the fuss is about, a post about my new favorite Social Distortion album is hardly relevant to the rest of the world.

So instead, I'm going to try something a little different. I found a blogging prompt on Tumblr about songs.

I don't know that I'll answer all of the days, since a few are rather personal and slightly angsty for a professional blog. We'll see what happens. The idea is to get blogging about music again. Hopefully more creative ideas will pop into my head as I work.

Hold on to your butts and I'll post Day 1 in just a minute. I had sweet music taste as a child, so get psyched.
